Ten-Year-Old Aariana Gawande Turned a Student’s View of Mathematics into a World Record

The young author’s 130-page guide to Vedic Mathematics grew from a simple desire to help classmates see difficult problems differently

Aariana Gulhane Gawande did not begin writing a book because she wanted to set a world record. She began because her classmates kept encountering mathematics problems she knew how to solve—and she wanted to share the methods that had helped her.


What started as explanations passed from one student to another gradually became Vedic Mathematics Reimagined: A Student’s Perspective, a 130-page instructional book containing mathematical techniques, visual explanations, worked examples and practice problems. Published on October 14, 2025, six days before Aariana’s eleventh birthday, the book has now earned her recognition from Atlas World Records as the:


YOUNGEST AUTHOR OF A PUBLISHED INSTRUCTIONAL BOOK ON VEDIC MATHEMATICS


Aariana was 10 years and 359 days old when the qualifying edition was published.

The distinction recognizes more than the unusual age of its author. It reflects the purpose behind the book: to explain mathematical ideas as they are experienced by a student encountering them for the first time.


“I remember exactly which parts confused me and which explanations finally made it click,” Aariana said. “When kids read a book written by another kid, I think they understand the concepts and tricks in a different way.”


Finding the Language Hidden Inside the World

Aariana’s fascination with mathematics began with the realization that numbers were not confined to the pages of a school workbook.


She saw mathematics in science, where it helps explain everything from cells to rockets. She found it in social studies, where charts, dates and maps give shape to history. She even recognized it in English, in the counted syllables of poetry and the patterns that organize writing.


“It wasn’t just a school subject—it was like the language of the world,” she said. “Once I noticed math hiding everywhere, I couldn’t stop being curious about it.”

Her formal journey began at approximately four and a half years old, when she studied Abacus and mental calculation with teacher Manisha Makhwana at the Aryabhatt Learning Institute in India. As Aariana became faster and more confident with numbers, she began wondering what might come next.


That curiosity led her to Vedic Mathematics, a system of calculation techniques rooted in ancient Indian mathematical traditions. Its methods offered alternate ways of approaching arithmetic and other mathematical problems—often with greater speed and fewer written steps.


Aariana was captivated by the discovery that a problem she had learned to solve one way might have an entirely different path to the same answer.


As she began applying the techniques to her own schoolwork, she also started showing them to friends. Those conversations revealed the possibility of something larger. If she could write down the explanations, she reasoned, she could help more students than she could by teaching the techniques one at a time.


The books available to her were often written for teachers or adults. Aariana wanted to create something different: a guide written in simple language, filled with visual steps and grounded in the kinds of problems children actually encounter in school.


“I wanted a kid to be able to open the book and feel like a friend was explaining the trick to them,” she said, “not like they were reading a textbook.”


One Chapter at a Time

Creating the book required Aariana to move beyond the methods she already knew. She researched additional Vedic Mathematics techniques, consulted instructional books and reviewed materials from her own curriculum. She then organized the concepts into chapters, grouping related approaches to addition, subtraction, division, square roots and other mathematical operations.


The most difficult part was not solving the problems. It was finding a way to make each process visible.


Aariana could explain a technique in words, but converting that explanation into a sequence of images and steps that another child could follow required patience. Each page needed to do more than present the correct answer; it needed to reveal how the answer could be reached.


Her mother supported the project, particularly when it came to manuscript formatting, page design, cover development, digital publishing and promotion. Aariana and her family are equally clear, however, about the source of the instructional material.


“The content of the book—every explanation, every technique, every example—came from what I had learned and understood myself,” Aariana said.


The collaboration allowed a child’s ideas and explanations to become a professionally presented publication without replacing the child’s authorship. Feedback from Aariana’s teacher also helped her identify areas requiring revision and refinement.


As she finished the final chapters and began reviewing the complete manuscript, Aariana realized that the project had become something more than an idea. The notes and drafts were now a book.


The first printed copy carried an additional meaning: Aariana presented it to her father as a surprise birthday gift.


“It was the most memorable day of 2025 and the best feeling I’ve had—seeing my finished book with my own name on the cover,” she said.


When the Lesson Reaches Another Student

Since publication, more than 200 copies of Vedic Mathematics Reimagined have been sold across several platforms, according to Aariana and her family. The most meaningful response did not come from a sales figure or an award. It came from a classmate.

The student told Aariana that one of the techniques from her book had helped solve a problem quickly during a test. The method had simply “clicked.”


That was precisely the experience Aariana had hoped to create.


“I remember exactly what it felt like to be confused by a math concept,” she said. “Knowing that another kid might read my book and have that same concept finally make sense to them means more to me than almost anything else about this whole experience.”


Her central message is that a child who struggles with mathematics may not lack mathematical ability. The child may simply need to encounter an explanation that better matches the way they think.


“Vedic Math tricks aren’t magic,” Aariana explained. “They’re just a different way of looking at a problem. Once you see them from a student’s perspective instead of a textbook’s, math stops feeling scary and starts feeling like a puzzle you actually want to solve.”


Writing the book has also changed Aariana’s understanding of herself. She has since led a “Speed Maths Secrets” session at her local recreation center, teaching the techniques directly to other students. The experience showed her that she enjoyed teaching as much as learning.


She now hopes to produce another book, potentially presenting Vedic Mathematics through a story-based format. She is also interested in exploring how mathematics can be taught to students with different learning styles and learning needs.


That interest forms part of a much broader life for the young author. Aariana is a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo who has competed in tournaments and helped teach younger students. She has pursued interests in art, drama and filmmaking, including serving as an associate producer on the short film Castaway. She also founded the Ashiana Children Foundation to support children with special needs and advocates for children affected by hearing loss and cleft conditions.


Establishing the World Benchmark

Before recognizing the achievement, Atlas World Records conducted an extensive cross-archive investigation involving international and Indian record organizations, publishing databases, bookseller catalogs, media archives and historical young-author claims.

The investigation considered not only exact record-title matches, but also potentially competing achievements involving child authors, mathematics books, textbooks, workbooks, multiplication-table compilations and instructional works on Vedic Mathematics.


The research identified children younger than Aariana who had published storybooks and other forms of writing. It also identified a six-year-old recognized by another record organization for writing a multiplication-table book. However, the available documentation did not establish that work as a formally published instructional text, and it was not devoted to Vedic Mathematics.


The strongest substantively comparable predecessor located was Gayatri Lodha, whose conventionally published instructional mathematics book grew from her study of Vedic Mathematics. Although she reportedly began compiling the work at a younger age, contemporaneous reporting placed her at approximately 13 when the book was published.


No younger author of a published instructional book specifically devoted to Vedic Mathematics was located.


The carefully defined title recognizes what the available evidence supports without confusing Aariana’s accomplishment with the many very different forms of young authorship. It also acknowledges an established educational subject rather than creating a category around incidental details of a single book.


For Aariana, however, the significance of the recognition remains much simpler.

“It shows that you don’t have to wait until you’re an adult, or an expert, to make something that actually helps people,” she said. “I wrote this book with what I knew at 10, and it still worked for other kids—so this recognition feels like proof that my age was never actually a limit.”


Her advice to other children begins in the same place her book did: not with certainty, expertise or a world record, but with the decision to begin.


“You don’t need to wait until you’re older to start,” Aariana said. “You just need to start with what you already know right now. Begin small, ask for help when you need it, and don’t let your age be the reason you talk yourself out of it.”
